Description
The square of San Antonio is a square of the Spanish city of Cadiz. With an area of 750 m², it has a unique historical and monumental importance.
At one time it was the so-called Campo de la Jara, larger than the current plaza. It was on the outskirts of the city, where the hermitage of San Antonio was erected, which over the years became a church, giving its name to the current square.
Devoid of central monuments, fountains or sculptures, there was previously a well that supplied the local population with water in the 16th century and is currently inside an adjoining farm; there also existed a monument dedicated to Lucio Cornelio Balbo el Menor.
The Plaza de San Antonio became, over time, a civil and religious center. In addition to the aforementioned church, the Provincial Library, the house of Pemán (with cultural dependencies of the Diputación de Cádiz), the Casino and annex, the Consulate of Argentina.
