Description
El Gallo Azul is a building located in the center of Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz) Spain.
Due to its special location and simple but personal architecture, it has become one of the architectural symbols of Jerez.
On the occasion of the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929, the Domecq family commissioned the Sevillian architect to create a building that would serve to beautify the crossing between Larga Street and Santa María Street, in the same square as the building, as a gift to the city. El Gallo Azul is a must see in the historic and commercial center of Jerez and perhaps because of this, it is one of the most photographed places.
The design of Aníbal González was a building of classic style and portentous, with class and elegance for the place where it would be located. Technically it fits into a regionalist and neo-Mudejar style.
The works began in 1927, finishing the following year. It follows the traditional brick architecture that Aníbal González was carrying out in Seville. In the same style, architect and period dates the Jerez train station.
It has the singularity of its almost circular plant. On the floor is an open gallery with Ionic white marble columns and on the top floor to get a large terrace in it.
With a studied composition of facade, finishes the building a great semicircular tile flanked by two jars of lilies.
Currently the building houses a restaurant and gastrobar, assigned for such use by the property. It is owned by local entrepreneurs.
